Abstract

The predicted fermentation capacity of the gut microbiota influences voluntary wheel running activity in mice.

  • Antibiotic-induced microbiome depletion reduced voluntary wheel running acquisition in mice.
  • Shifting the gut microbiota's predicted function from anaerobic fermentation to aerobic respiration was associated with decreased exercise motivation.
  • Supplementation with short-chain fatty acids restored normal voluntary wheel running activity in microbiome-depleted mice.
  • Dietary pretreatment with 2.5% prebiotic fiber (inulin) increased both fermentative capacity of the microbiota and voluntary wheel running activity above baseline levels.
  • Microbiome manipulation altered corticosterone responses to exercise, indicating a complex relationship between gut microbiota and neuroendocrine regulation during physical activity.
