Key cell death genes linked to immune changes in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and their role in age-related muscle loss

Updated

Abstract

Thirty-five ferroptosis-related genes were identified as differentially expressed in dystrophic muscle.

  • Ferroptosis may connect iron dysregulation to muscle wasting in aging.
  • Three hub genes—HIF1A, CDKN1A, and CD44—are associated with hypoxic responses, cellular aging, and iron-related processes.
  • Analysis indicated altered immune cell composition, with increased proportions of certain T cells and macrophages.
  • Potential links were observed between ferroptosis-related gene expression and changes in immune cell populations.
  • Validation showed upregulation of HIF1A, CDKN1A, and CD44 at the mRNA level and increased protein levels in mdx mice.
