The link between fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome: A systematic review

Updated

Abstract

Fibromyalgia (FM) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) share overlapping mechanisms that may contribute to their comorbidity.

  • Immune system dysregulation involving mast cells and inflammatory proteins can damage the gut barrier.
  • Changes in the gut microbiome and neurotransmitter levels may influence each other and are linked to symptom severity.
  • Serotonin and tryptophan metabolism are important for pain perception, particularly in relation to visceral sensitivity.
  • Therapeutic strategies targeting the gut microbiome, such as probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation, are promising but need further investigation.
  • Future research should consider gender differences in these conditions and explore medications affecting serotonin pathways.
