First signs that an mRNA vaccine can protect young elephants naturally infected with EEHV1A

Abstract

Both juvenile male calves maintained viral loads below 6,000 viral genome equivalents (VGE)/mL following experimental vaccination against EEHV1A.

  • Juvenile Asian elephants with no maternal antibodies are at high risk for fatal hemorrhagic disease from EEHV1A infection.
  • An experimental EEHV1A mRNA vaccine was administered to seronegative calves, resulting in significant antibody production against vaccine-targeted proteins.
  • Antibody levels showed a decline by day 102 post-booster, yet remained elevated after the onset of viremia.
  • Both calves developed EEHV1A viremia but exhibited no clinical signs or hematological issues.
  • Sustained antibody levels were observed in serum after viremia, indicating a potential protective effect against disease severity.
