Using focused ultrasound and microbubbles to improve stem cell movement to the brain

Abstract

FUS at 300 kPa induced a 1.3-fold reduction in the protein intensity associated with blood-brain barrier tight junctions.

  • Focused ultrasound combined with microbubbles temporarily increased the permeability of the blood-brain barrier.
  • Safe blood-brain barrier opening did not enhance stem cell delivery compared to opening alone and could even hinder it.
  • Stem cell migration increased by 1.8-2.6 times following treatment.
  • The number of stem cells in the brain peaked 24 hours post-treatment and could be maintained for up to 7 days.
  • Both blood-brain barrier opening and inflammation play roles in stem cell migration.
