Ten percent of 126 Veterans seeking weight management met the diagnostic threshold for food addiction.

  • Food addiction is significantly correlated with higher BMI, emotional eating, night eating, and symptoms of depression and insomnia.
  • Participants with Binge Eating Disorder showed a prevalence of food addiction at 75%, compared to 5.4% in those without the disorder.
  • Food addiction accounted for 15% of the variance in BMI, indicating a stronger association than general eating disorder pathology.
  • The Modified Yale Food Addiction Scale (mYFAS) appears valid for assessing food addiction in a non-research based weight management setting.
