Frailty linked to higher risk of problems in nearly 39,000 UK adults with prediabetes

Updated

Abstract

49.1% of adults with prediabetes were identified as prefrail, while 5.9% were classified as frail.

  • Prefrailty and frailty are linked to increased risks of numerous adverse health outcomes in adults with prediabetes.
  • Frail individuals with prediabetes have a 73% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to nonfrail counterparts.
  • The risk of diabetes-related microvascular disease is 89% higher in frail adults with prediabetes.
  • Frail participants also face a 66% increased risk of cardiovascular disease and a 76% higher risk of chronic kidney disease.
  • Other significant risks include a 31% increase for eye disease, a 103% increase for dementia, and a 201% increase for depression.
  • Every 1-point increase in the frailty score correlates with a 10% to 42% rise in the risk of these adverse outcomes.
