Using n-acetylcysteine to reduce cell aging in human blood vessel cells through the HuR pathway

Abstract

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment significantly decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and p21 levels in senescent human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

  • Cellular senescence contributes to chronic inflammation and age-related diseases.
  • Late-passage HUVECs displayed characteristics of senescence, including increased SA-β-galactosidase activity and elevated ROS levels.
  • There was a progressive decline in the expression of the RNA-binding protein HuR from early to late passages.
  • NAC treatment restored HuR expression and reduced levels of inflammatory markers IL-6 and TNF-α.
  • The findings indicate that the decline of the HuR-protective axis may drive endothelial senescence.
