How Artificial Light at Night Affects the Visibility of Forest Plant Changes Across India

Updated

Abstract

Total illuminated area in India increased from approximately 0.58 to 2.51 million km2, representing a more than fourfold expansion from 2012 to 2024.

  • Around 46-53% of illumination expansion occurred within 2 km, and about 80% within 5 km of forest boundaries.
  • Night-time light (NTL) showed a strong correlation with electricity consumption and urban population (r ≈ 0.92-0.96).
  • At the annual aggregate level, NTL had strong raw correlations with vegetation metrics (EVI: r ≈ 0.83; GPP: r = 0.74).
  • Detrended analyses revealed weak correlations for EVI (-0.008), NDVI (-0.019), and GPP (0.029), indicating a lack of consistent moderate regional-scale response.
  • Effect-size analyses suggested reasonable sensitivity to detect moderate associations, but forest-type analyses indicated lower sensitivity.
