Bowel function after low rectal surgery measured by muscle pressure tests

Updated

Abstract

In total, 65 patients were enrolled in the study, with 33.9% experiencing minor and 36.9% major low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) one year after surgery.

  • One year post-surgery, symptoms of minor or major LARS were reported by nearly 70% of patients.
  • Most patients exhibited decreased resting pressure in the anal sphincters while maintaining normal squeeze pressure.
  • Rectal compliance and tolerability for rectal volume (first sensation, urge to defecate, and discomfort volume) were significantly reduced.
  • A correlation was found between the severity of LARS and lower values of anal sphincter resting pressure and rectal compliance parameters.
