Galacto-oligosaccharides reduce anxiety and depression caused by plastic nanoparticles through gut-based serotonin pathways

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Polystyrene nanoplastics disrupted a gut-to-brain serotonin pathway in mice, while galacto-oligosaccharides partly reversed those changes.

Evidence

A 28-day mouse oral-exposure experiment tested 2, 10, and 50 mg/kg/day PS-NPs with microbiome, barrier, inflammatory, metabolic, hippocampal, behavioral, and GOS-intervention assays.

Caveat

The work is preclinical and short term, with mouse behavioral and molecular endpoints, so it cannot establish human emotional-disorder risk or dietary GOS efficacy.
