Gastrodin reduces sudden gut inflammation and related anxiety and depression symptoms, but not thinking problems, by changing gut bacteria and lowering inflammation

Updated

Abstract

GAS (240 mg/kg) treatment improved behavioral abnormalities and restored colon length in a mouse model of acute colitis.

  • GAS treatment alleviated anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in mice.
  • Colonic histopathological injury was reduced following GAS administration.
  • GAS altered gut microbiota composition, increasing Sporosarcina and Nitrospirae while decreasing Clostridiaceae and Lachnospiraceae.
  • Metabolomics revealed that GAS normalized taurine levels and shifted the metabolic profile away from DSS-induced disturbances.
  • GAS restored the tight junction protein Occludin and reduced levels of the inflammatory marker TNF-α.
  • Quantitative proteomics indicated that GAS reversed the abnormal expression of 191 colonic proteins.
