How common acid reflux is and what triggers it in young people in Tabriz, Northwest Iran

Abstract

The prevalence of weekly heartburn and/or acid regurgitation in a young population is 6.3%.

  • Mild to moderate severity of symptoms was reported among those with GERD.
  • No differences in GERD symptom prevalence were found between genders or age groups.
  • Higher prevalence of GERD symptoms was noted in individuals with atypical symptoms.
  • A family history of upper gastrointestinal disease was linked to a lower prevalence of GERD.
  • Increased body mass index, along with coffee and tea consumption, may be associated with a higher prevalence of GERD symptoms.
