Gut Disorders and the Risk of Having a First Ischemic Stroke

Abstract

Among a mean of 1,725,246 Medicare beneficiaries, several gastrointestinal disorders were associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke.

  • Disorders of the stomach showed a 17% increased risk of ischemic stroke.
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders were associated with a 16% increased risk.
  • Inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders correlated with a 13% increased risk.
  • Infectious gastrointestinal disorders were also linked to a 13% increased risk.
  • No associations with ischemic stroke were found for diseases of the anus and rectum or neoplastic gastrointestinal disorders.
