Hydrogel with Lab-Grown Human Spinal Cord Tissue Helps Nerve Repair and Movement Recovery in Rats with Spinal Injuries

Abstract

Implantation of GelMA+hSCOs composites significantly enhanced functional recovery in a rat spinal cord injury model (n = 6/group).

  • Human spinal cord organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem cells expressed key spinal cord markers and maintained high viability within GelMA hydrogels.
  • Functional recovery was assessed using locomotor scores and inclined plane tests over 4 weeks.
  • GelMA+hSCOs treatment resulted in improved locomotor scores and inclination angles compared to SCI and GelMA-only controls.
  • Histological analysis showed that GelMA+hSCOs reduced lesion volume and promoted neuronal integration at the injury site.
  • Treatment also attenuated astrogliosis and suppressed neuroinflammation relative to control groups.
