Gene activity along the gut-brain system in mice without microbes and mice with normal microbes

Updated

Abstract

In the hippocampus, 276 differentially expressed genes were identified in germ-free mice compared to colonized mice.

  • Transcriptional changes in the brain may suggest how gut microbiota influences brain development and function.
  • Differentially expressed genes were notably found in the hippocampus, thalamus, and pons, with 276, 345, and 21 genes respectively.
  • Only a small number of differentially expressed genes were identified in the midbrain (2) and medulla oblongata (4), with none in the cerebellum or corpus callosum.
  • These findings may guide future research on the microbiome's role in neurological diseases.
