Gene expression changes in mouse female reproductive tissues after single and combined infection with a worm and herpes virus

Updated

Abstract

A total of 368 differentially expressed genes were identified in the female genital tract tissues of BALB/c mice infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).

  • Single infections with either soil-transmitted helminths or HSV-2 resulted in distinct gene expression profiles when compared to uninfected controls.
  • Of the 368 differentially expressed genes, 356 were upregulated and 12 were downregulated in the context of HSV-2 infection.
  • Several immune-related genes showed significant changes, including those associated with immune and defense responses.
  • HSV-2 infection was associated with early downregulation of immune genes, indicating potential viral immune evasion strategies.
  • No significant transcriptional changes were observed in co-infected tissues, suggesting immune antagonism that may suppress the immune response to HSV-2.
