Tracking the genetics and vaccine response to the main SARS-CoV-2 XBB variant in Rio Grande do Sul

Updated

Abstract

In March 2023, XBB accounted for 83.3% of SARS-CoV-2 cases in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

  • 143 samples were identified as XBB, while 586 were classified as other Omicron lineages.
  • 97.7% of patients infected with XBB recovered, with a low mortality rate of 2.3%.
  • 59.5% of previously infected and vaccinated patients experienced reinfection with XBB.
  • 54% of individuals had an interval of over one year since their last vaccine dose before XBB infection.
  • 90 mutations associated with immune resistance were identified in the XBB lineage, particularly in the Spike protein region.
