Abstract
Chronic pain affects more than one in five adults worldwide.
- Chronic pain is increasingly viewed as related to the gut-brain axis.
- Gut microbial dysbiosis is associated with lower diversity and fewer beneficial bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids.
- Reduced levels of specific gut microbes like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Lachnospiraceae, and Roseburia may contribute to pain sensitization.
- Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and its receptor agonists may influence both gut microbiota and pain perception.
- The gut microbiota may serve as a link between GLP-1 receptor agonists and the modulation of chronic pain.
