Digestive and Liver Safety of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Medicines in People with Type 2 Diabetes

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 RA use was associated with a higher risk of gastroparesis (HR 1.591) and intussusception (HR 1.383) compared to other oral antidiabetic medications.

  • No significant differences in acute pancreatitis, cholecystitis, or cholecystectomy rates were found between GLP-1 RAs and other oral diabetes medications.
  • GLP-1 RA therapy was not linked to an increased incidence of GI cancers.
  • Lower hazard ratios for pancreatic, gastric, esophageal, and colorectal cancers were observed, although causality cannot be inferred.
  • No significant differences were noted in biliary cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma rates.
