Real-world use of diabetes drugs focuses on body weight and age more than heart and kidney risk: a large data study using machine learning

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In Italian adults with type 2 diabetes, SGLT2i prescribing aligned more with cardiorenal risk, while GLP-1RA prescribing was driven more by BMI and age.

Evidence

This machine-learning cohort analysis used 2023 Italian AMD Annals registry data from 139,202 adults with type 2 diabetes across four ADA cardiorenal phenotypic subgroups.

Caveat

These are observational prescribing patterns with variable model performance, especially for GLP-1RA prescriptions, so they do not prove clinician reasoning or patient outcome effects.
