How three diabetes treatments compare in dementia risk for older adults with type 2 diabetes in Sweden

Updated

Abstract

Among 88,381 participants with type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 agonists were associated with a reduced risk of dementia compared to other treatments over an average follow-up of 4.3 years.

  • A total of 4607 cases of dementia were reported during the follow-up period.
  • Dementia incidence rates were 6.7 per 1000 person years for GLP-1 agonist users, 11.8 for DPP-4 inhibitor users, and 13.7 for sulfonylurea users.
  • GLP-1 agonist initiation was linked to a 31% lower risk of dementia compared to sulfonylureas.
  • Compared to DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists were associated with a 23% lower risk of dementia.
  • Findings were consistent across various sensitivity analyses, including a more strict adherence analysis.
