Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and their effects on body weight and kidney protein levels in people with and without type 2 diabetes

Abstract

In a meta-analysis of 10 trials involving 26,088 participants, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists reduced body weight by an average of -5.85 kg.

  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists lowered the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio by an average of -27.94%.
  • A significant reduction in the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio was observed in individuals with type 2 diabetes (mean difference, -25.70%).
  • A less precise reduction in the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio was noted in populations without type 2 diabetes (mean difference, -30.93%).
  • A modest decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate was reported (mean difference, -0.82 mL/min/1.73 m²).
  • Longer treatment duration was associated with reduced effect, while higher baseline albuminuria was linked to greater benefit.
  • The evidence for weight loss was rated as high certainty, while the certainty for urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio changes was moderate.
