Using Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Drugs to Manage High Output from Intestinal Stomas: A Review

Abstract

Treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists is associated with a clinically meaningful reduction in stoma output of up to 50%.

  • Three studies evaluated the safety and efficacy of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists for high stoma output.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists were linked to reduced reliance on parenteral nutrition.
  • Improvements were noted in nutritional and anthropometric indices among patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Mild gastrointestinal symptoms, mainly nausea, were the most common adverse effects, with no serious adverse events reported.
  • The evidence is limited by small, heterogeneous, and non-randomized studies.
