Possible Benefits of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Drugs for Breathing Problems

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies may have beneficial effects on various respiratory conditions.

  • GLP-1 is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite.
  • Recent literature indicates that GLP-1 agonists may positively impact respiratory disorders such as acute lung injury, COVID-19, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and obstructive sleep apnea.
  • The use of GLP-1 receptor agonists could complement existing respiratory treatments.
  • Both beneficial and undesirable effects of GLP-1 RA therapies on respiratory health are noted in the review.
