Activation of a hormone receptor in lung cells helps lung growth in newborn rats exposed to high oxygen

Abstract

GLP-1R signaling is implicated in lung development, particularly in alveolar type II cells, during the early postnatal period.

  • GLP-1R expression is primarily observed in alveolar type II cells of neonatal rats.
  • Hyperoxia reduces GLP-1R protein and gene expression in these cells and is associated with accelerated bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) development.
  • Under hyperoxia, ATP production decreases and glycolysis levels increase in alveolar type II cells.
  • Activation of GLP-1R signaling may enhance ATP production and decrease glycolysis by influencing mitochondrial fission through dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1).
  • The m6A modification level of GLP-1R mRNA is reduced in hyperoxia conditions, primarily influenced by the methyltransferase METTL14.
