Glucose- and pH-Responsive Gels That Fight Bacteria, Reduce Damage, and Help Blood Vessel Growth to Heal Infected Diabetic Foot Sores

Abstract

The QO/@PV@AB7 hydrogel reduced wound healing time by four days in an MRSA-infected diabetic foot ulcer model.

  • The hydrogel is responsive to acidic conditions and high glucose levels, which are characteristic of diabetic foot ulcers.
  • It effectively scavenges various reactive oxygen species, potentially alleviating oxidative stress in cells.
  • The hydrogel promotes angiogenesis and enhances the viability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
  • It exhibits strong antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli.
  • In vivo testing showed increased secretion of pro-angiogenic factors and a reduction in inflammatory cytokines after hydrogel administration.
