Changes in Blood Sugar Control, Gut Inflammation, and Short-Chain Fatty Acids After 12 Weeks of Multi-Species Probiotic Use

Abstract

Probiotic supplementation significantly reduced fasting glucose by 1.8 mmol/L after 12 weeks compared to placebo.

  • Supplementation with a multi-species probiotic led to reductions in glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) levels.
  • Inflammatory biomarkers, including lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), soluble CD14 (sCD14), and high-sensitivity-reactive protein (hs-CRP), decreased in the probiotic group.
  • Plasma levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) did not show significant changes overall, except for higher valerate in the probiotic group at 12 weeks.
  • The findings suggest that probiotics may help improve glucose regulation and reduce inflammation in adults with subthreshold depression.
