Licorice plant reduces gut inflammation in mice by blocking harmful immune signals and balancing gut bacteria

Updated

Abstract

Licorice water extraction significantly affected gut microbiota diversity in ulcerative colitis mice.

  • Licorice water extraction reduced inflammation in colonic tissues by altering the protein expression of TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB.
  • The treatment improved the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier by increasing tight junction protein expression.
  • Licorice reversed the imbalance in T helper type 17/regulatory T cell differentiation in the colons of ulcerative colitis mice.
  • The expression of ROR-γt and Foxp3 proteins was influenced by licorice in the colons.
  • Licorice increased the quantity and diversity of beneficial gut bacteria in the ulcerative colitis mouse model.
