Assessing brain waste clearance and white-matter changes in major depression using water movement imaging

Abstract

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibited a lower DTI-ALPS score compared to healthy controls (P=0.001).

  • The DTI-ALPS index may serve as an independent predictor of depression severity, anxiety levels, and cognitive function.
  • Increased axial diffusivity, mean diffusivity, and radial diffusivity were observed in patients with MDD compared to healthy controls (all P values <0.05).
  • A lower DTI-ALPS score correlated with higher values of axial diffusivity, mean diffusivity, and radial diffusivity.
  • Specific diffusion indicators in the left cingulum bundle, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, and left uncinate fasciculus differed significantly between patients with MDD and healthy controls.
  • Point-wise analysis indicated a negative correlation between the mean diffusivity of the left cingulum bundle and the DTI-ALPS score at specific nodes.
