GPX3 expression in spiral ganglion neurons is significantly decreased with aging, which is associated with increased oxidative stress and apoptosis.

  • Degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons is a key feature of age-related hearing loss.
  • Increased age correlates with higher levels of oxidative stress and apoptosis in spiral ganglion neurons.
  • Targeted upregulation of GPX3 in these neurons may reduce hearing threshold and improve auditory function.
  • Overexpression of GPX3 is linked to enhanced autophagy levels in spiral ganglion neurons.
  • The protective effects of GPX3 can be negated by the inhibition of autophagy.
  • The small molecule drug ebselen shows potential in reducing degeneration in spiral ganglion neurons and improving hearing by activating autophagy.
