Greek High-Phenol Early Harvest Olive Oil May Reduce Brain Over-Excitation in People with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Updated

Abstract

The Greek High Phenolic Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil (HP-EH-EVOO) significantly reduced the nonlinearity index (NI) associated with information flow in brain activity.

  • A total of 43 subjects participated, with groups receiving Mediterranean Diet, Moderate Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
  • The HP-EH-EVOO group showed a significant decrease in signal spectrum within 1-13 Hz and theta/beta ratio during eyes-open conditions.
  • Cross-frequency coupling improvements were noted across all groups, but were more pronounced in the HP-EH-EVOO group.
  • Post-intervention, the HP-EH-EVOO group exhibited a significant reduction in NI compared to both the Moderate Phenolic and Mediterranean Diet groups.
