Links Between Green Space, Air Pollution, and Different Patterns of Biological Aging

Updated

Abstract

Higher green space is associated with lower odds of accelerated biological aging in a high-pollution environment.

  • Three distinct biological age acceleration profiles were identified: slow, moderate, and accelerated aging.
  • Higher green space exposure (as measured by NDVI) was linked to an odds ratio of 0.84 for accelerated aging.
  • Increased exposure to air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and O3, was associated with higher odds of accelerated aging.
  • The air pollution mixture had a positive association with accelerated aging, with an odds ratio of 1.16, primarily influenced by O3 and PM10.
  • About 25.0% of the protective effect of green space on biological aging was mediated through reduced exposure to pollution.
