Gut Bacteria and Alzheimer's Risk: The Role of APOE Gene

Abstract

Higher amyloid-β (Aβ) burden is associated with a depletion of protective gut bacteria and an increase in pro-inflammatory taxa.

  • Depletion of protective bacteria like Faecalibacterium and Ruminococcus correlates with increased Aβ levels.
  • Pro-inflammatory bacteria such as Alistipes and Bacteroides are enriched in individuals with higher Aβ burden.
  • APOE ε4 carriers demonstrate a wider range of microbial imbalance compared to non-carriers.
  • Specific gut bacteria, including Ruminococcus and Butyricicoccus, may mediate approximately 0.3-0.4% of the impact of APOE ε4 on global Aβ levels.
  • Individuals with elevated Aβ levels show reduced abundance of microbial genes associated with important metabolic pathways.
