Gut bacteria linked to brain development in infants with heart defects

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In infants with congenital heart disease, early gut microbiome patterns were linked to later cognitive, language, and motor scores.

Evidence

This prospective cohort study analyzed 24 cardiac intensive care patients with serial fecal 16S rRNA samples and Bayley neurodevelopmental testing at 9 to 12 months.

Caveat

The sample was small, several microbiome associations were exploratory or marginal, and the design cannot show that dysbiosis caused neurodevelopmental differences.
