Gut Bacteria and Restless Legs Syndrome: Finding Connections

Abstract

Significant differences in gut microbiota composition were found in 37 patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) compared to healthy controls and insomnia patients.

  • A decrease in the abundance of Lachnoclostridium and Flavonifractor genera was observed in RLS patients compared to both insomnia and healthy control groups.
  • Lachnoclostridium abundance appeared to decrease with longer disease duration and was related to a predominant motor phenotype.
  • Several bacterial genera in the RLS group were significantly associated with scores from validated questionnaires measuring restless legs symptoms and sleep quality.
