Gut-brain connections in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases: bacteria-related markers and new treatments

Abstract

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate and acetate were identified as noninvasive biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, and Parkinson's disease.

  • Lower levels of SCFAs correlated with cognitive decline in patients.
  • Using combinations of SCFAs improved diagnostic accuracy, with AUCs ranging from 0.75 to 0.87.
  • Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels exhibited inconsistent associations with disease risk.
  • Therapeutic strategies involving probiotics, prebiotics, dietary changes, and fecal microbiota transplantation showed cognitive benefits.
  • These approaches may also modulate gut-brain signaling pathways.
