Genetic evidence for a link between gut-brain communication and chronic pain

Genetic analyses suggest gut microbiota and brain structural connectivity may contribute to chronic pain pathways.

Evidence

A two-sample and mediation analysis used GWAS summary statistics for gut microbiota (n = 18,340), brain structural connectivity (n = 26,333), and 15 FinnGen chronic pain conditions, identifying 101 gut microbial abundances, 127 brain connectivity phenotypes, and 10 gut microbiota-brain connectivity-chronic pain pathways with potential causal associations.

Caveat

The results depend on genetic instruments, summary-level GWAS data, and mediation assumptions, and the abstract reports many potential associations without experimental or clinical validation.
