Gut bacteria transplant may reduce brain and organ damage after stroke by blocking cell death pathways

Updated

Abstract

H-FMT significantly improved neurological deficits and intestinal barrier disruption in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

  • Treatment with H-FMT reduced infarct volume and neuronal loss.
  • Mitochondrial damage was attenuated following H-FMT administration.
  • H-FMT was associated with reduced apoptosis and inflammation in brain tissue.
  • Increased Caspase-8 activation was observed after H-FMT treatment.
  • H-FMT restored microbial diversity and enriched beneficial Lactobacillus while reducing pathogenic Proteobacteria.
  • Due to the small sample size, these findings are considered preliminary.
