Movement of Bacteroides Uniformis from Gut to Liver May Reduce Severe Fatty Liver Disease by Stopping Liver Cell Damage Through Propionic Acid

Abstract

A marked reduction in the abundance of Bacteroides uniformis is observed in liver samples from patients with advanced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

  • The gut microbiota is implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
  • Reduced levels of B. uniformis are found in both liver and fecal samples from advanced MASLD patients.
  • In a mouse model, decreased B. uniformis levels are also observed in hepatic and gut microbial communities.
  • Administration of B. uniformis increases its abundance in the liver and reduces several features of advanced MASLD.
  • Propionic acid is identified as a key mediator that contributes to the protective effects of B. uniformis.
  • Both B. uniformis and propionic acid may inhibit lipid peroxidation and related stress in liver cells.
