Abstract
A marked reduction in the abundance of Bacteroides uniformis is observed in liver samples from patients with advanced metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
- The gut microbiota is implicated in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
- Reduced levels of B. uniformis are found in both liver and fecal samples from advanced MASLD patients.
- In a mouse model, decreased B. uniformis levels are also observed in hepatic and gut microbial communities.
- Administration of B. uniformis increases its abundance in the liver and reduces several features of advanced MASLD.
- Propionic acid is identified as a key mediator that contributes to the protective effects of B. uniformis.
- Both B. uniformis and propionic acid may inhibit lipid peroxidation and related stress in liver cells.
