Gut Microbiome Differences in Depression With and Without Abnormal Dream-Related Movements

Updated

Abstract

A total of 420 participants were analyzed to explore microbial signatures associated with major depressive disorder and REM sleep behavior disorder.

  • MDD combined with RBD exhibited signs indicative of early neurodegeneration, such as increased likelihood of prodromal Parkinson's Disease and olfactory and motor deficits.
  • The microbial composition in individuals with MDD plus RBD was distinct from healthy controls and those with MDD only, showing similarities to individuals with isolated RBD.
  • Specific microbial taxa, including enriched Akkermansia muciniphila and depleted Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, were identified in the MDD plus RBD group.
  • Functional analysis revealed reduced capabilities for B-vitamin production and polysaccharide breakdown in the MDD plus RBD group, resembling patterns seen in isolated RBD.
  • A machine-learning model effectively distinguished MDD plus RBD from MDD-only participants with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.73 during cross-validation and 0.79 in an independent validation dataset.
