How Gut Bacteria May Link Air Pollution to Thinking Skills in Older Adults

Abstract

Higher PM2.5 and O3 exposures were associated with disturbances in microbial composition and increased levels of 2-oxoglutarate.

  • Air pollution exposure was linked to decreased abundances of specific gut bacteria, such as Blautia obeum and Gordonibacter pamelaeae.
  • Altered microbial functional pathways were particularly noted in those regulating 2-oxoglutarate.
  • Increased circulating levels of 2-oxoglutarate and l-glutamine were associated with a higher likelihood of mild cognitive impairment.
  • The risk of cognitive decline over two years was also associated with elevated air pollution levels.
  • Changes in gut microbial energy metabolism pathways may mediate the relationship between air pollution and cognitive health.
