Approximately 55 million individuals worldwide are affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.

  • AD is characterized by cognitive impairment and irreversible neuronal degeneration.
  • The pathogenic mechanisms of AD are not fully understood despite extensive research.
  • There is a lack of effective therapeutic strategies for preventing or delaying AD progression.
  • Emerging evidence indicates that the microbiota-gut-brain axis may significantly influence neurodegenerative diseases, including AD.
  • The changes in gut microbiota during AD progression in various transgenic mouse models are not well characterized.
