Gut bacteria in children with autism and their family members
Updated
Abstract
Essence
Children with autism spectrum disorder in these families had distinct gut microbiota patterns linked to ASD-specific symptoms.
Evidence
This family-based metagenomic sequencing study compared gut microbiota among 19 children with ASD, 8 non-ASD siblings, and 36 parents from 17 families.
Caveat
The sample was small and observational, so the microbiome differences cannot show that gut bacteria contribute to ASD pathogenesis or treatment response.
