Gut Bacteria, Probiotics, and Migraines: A Review and Combined Analysis

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Current evidence suggests migraine is associated with gut microbiome changes, and probiotics may reduce migraine frequency.

Evidence

This PRISMA clinical review included 14 studies and a meta-analysis of 2 randomized controlled trials, which found probiotic effects on migraine frequency but not clear effects on severity or attack duration.

Caveat

The probiotic meta-analysis rests on only two heterogeneous trials with limited methodological consistency.
