Gut bacteria-produced short-chain fatty acids help the anti-aging effects of a plant fiber by regulating immune cells in the intestines of mice

Abstract

DOPP, a polysaccharide with a weight-average molecular weight of 65.33 kDa, was isolated from Dendrobium officinale.

  • Intestinal aging may be linked to dysbiosis of gut microbiota and low production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate.
  • DOPP administration improved aging-related intestinal conditions, strengthened the intestinal barrier, and reduced inflammation in aged mice.
  • DOPP reshaped gut microbiota by decreasing aging-related bacteria and increasing populations of butyrate-producing bacteria.
  • The increase in SCFAs, especially butyrate, may enhance the differentiation of regulatory T-cells by boosting mitochondrial function in the colon.
  • Fecal microbiota transplantation suggested that the effects of DOPP on intestinal aging depend significantly on a healthy gut microbiota.
