Regularly Short Sleep and Insulin Resistance Are Linked in Obese People

Abstract

Insulin-resistant individuals averaged 6.53 hours of sleep per night, significantly less than the 7.24 hours reported by insulin-sensitive individuals.

  • Insulin-resistant individuals reported shortened sleep duration more frequently than insulin-sensitive individuals (60% vs. 24%).
  • SSPG concentrations were found to differ 2.5-fold between insulin-resistant and insulin-sensitive individuals.
  • Impaired fasting glucose and glucose intolerance were common in both groups, each exceeding 40%.
  • No significant differences were observed in body mass index, waist circumference, or glucose concentrations between the two groups.
  • There is an independent association between habitual shortened sleep and insulin resistance among obese adults without diabetes.
