Hair stress hormone and resting heart rate patterns distinguish long COVID from depression in young people

Updated

Abstract

Participants with depressive disorders exhibited higher hair cortisol concentration (HCC) than those with long COVID.

  • Cumulative HPA axis activity was measured using hair cortisol concentration.
  • Participants with long COVID showed reduced parasympathetic activity and diminished autonomic adaptability.
  • Fatigue and psychological distress in long COVID were linked to lower parasympathetic activity.
  • Fatigue in long COVID was also associated with lower hair cortisol concentration.
  • Distinct psychobiological profiles were observed between long COVID and depressive disorders.
