Haptoglobin Types Identify Differences in Brain Oxygen and Metabolism Linked to Thinking Problems After Exercise in Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 44 individuals with Long COVID, Hp phenotypes identified clinically distinct subgroups with varying symptoms and cognitive responses.

  • Hp2 allele carriers experienced greater fatigue and poorer physical function compared to Hp1-1 individuals.
  • Post-exertional cognitive decline was significant in Hp2-2 participants, while Hp1-1 individuals displayed cognitive resilience.
  • Higher post-exertional cerebral oxygen extraction was observed in Hp1-1 individuals compared to Hp2 allele carriers.
  • Distinct metabolic signatures were noted, with Hp2 carriers showing lower levels of citric acid, isethionate, and glucosamine.
  • Lower metabolite levels were linked to poorer cognitive performance.
