Quality of Life in Cancer Patients Receiving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors in Clinical Trials

Abstract

A total of 8341 patients from 17 trials showed that treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) delayed clinical deterioration compared to standard chemotherapy (CT).

  • ICIs delayed deterioration in Global Health Status/QoL measured by the EORTC QLQ-C30, with a hazard ratio of 0.81.
  • In the EQ-5D utility index, ICIs showed a hazard ratio of 0.65, indicating a longer time to deterioration compared to CT.
  • The EQ-5D visual analogue scale (VAS) also favored ICIs, with a hazard ratio of 0.70.
  • The mean change in quality of life for ICI-treated patients was 5.82 points higher than that of CT-treated patients.
  • Similar advantages were observed in the EQ-5D, with mean change differences of 0.05 in the Utility Index and 5.41 in the VAS favoring ICIs.
